Dimming profiles enable up to 33% energy savings in LED outdoor lighting

Our lighting designer Atte Heinonen explored in his thesis how dimming profiles in outdoor lighting actually affect the energy consumption of the lighting network in Jyväskylä. Dimming profiles are a control method for LED luminaires, used to reduce lighting levels at desired times.
The results of the study showed that using a dimming profile reduced the total annual energy consumption by an average of 33% compared to a scenario where no dimming was applied. However, the amount of energy saved depends on the duration and intensity of dimming, so the result cannot be directly generalized.
The thesis also examined energy savings in a scenario where old gas-discharge lamp luminaires were replaced with LED luminaires equipped with dimming profiles. In December measurements, this resulted in over 55% energy savings. Moreover, based on a calculated estimate, renovating 34 old lighting control cabinets in this way could save the city €100,000 in energy costs.
Lighting creates a sense of security
Although turning off lights at night was almost always a more energy-efficient option compared to dimming, lighting still plays a crucial role in creating a sense of security in urban and residential areas as well as in traffic.
With dimming profiles, adequate lighting can be provided more evenly across different areas where energy savings are desired.
