Kuopio pilots real-time situational awareness for street maintenance

Smart maintenance is a key function in smart cities. It enables the city to monitor and manage maintenance tasks in real time. The pilot project launched by the City of Kuopio enhances maintenance digitalization.

The City of Kuopio has launched a two-year pilot project aimed at consolidating maintenance tasks into a single visual, real-time situational overview. During the winter season of 2025–2026, monitoring will cover snow plowing and sanding, including reporting on their execution within the contract areas. In the summer of 2026, the pilot will expand to include mowing of green areas, emptying of trash bins, and replacement of traffic signs.

The solution delivered by Nodeon provides a map view that shows the progress of each maintenance task. The pilot also tests contract area management features, such as a project repository, site diary, and incident reporting. Data collection and distribution utilize Kuopio’s own Datajalostamo smart city platform.

The pilot aligns with the goals of the ProDigial II program, which focuses on digitalization in the infrastructure sector and the development of situational awareness, but it is being implemented as Kuopio’s own initiative.

The project will leverage Kuopio’s existing traffic situational awareness system and the technical solutions developed for it. The aim is to build a system that anticipates needs and provides maintenance information immediately to support decision-making.
