Smart sorting yard boosts recycling — Veloop and Nodeon join forces
Automation Electrical engineering Infrastructure and Digitalization Lighting design Smart City

Improving waste sorting and recycling is a key part of cities’ and municipalities’ climate and circular economy goals. At the same time, residents expect convenient and flexible waste management services. Veloop Sorting Yard meets these needs with a self-service solution for waste drop-off. Nodeon has been involved in designing the electrical systems, lighting, and control systems for the sorting yards.
A smart sorting yard benefits cities, waste operators, and residents
“Veloop Sorting Yard is a concept for efficient waste sorting. It’s a remotely monitored waste station that operates on a self-service basis with no on-site staff,” says Jarkko Saaranen, construction manager at Veloop Oy.
For cities and municipalities, the sorting yard offers an effective way to improve waste sorting and increase recycling rates. The straightforward, independent service also makes it easier for residents to sort their waste correctly, whenever it suits them best.
For waste operators, Veloop Sorting Yard brings significant cost savings. Remote monitoring and automation reduce operating costs and staffing needs. Clear instructions and real-time guidance cut sorting errors, resulting in cleaner, more recyclable waste fractions. Accurate data on bin fill levels and peak times also enables better optimisation of waste collection.
“When Nodeon joined the design team, we took a big leap forward.”

Smart technology powers self-service — Nodeon involved in the design
Behind Veloop Sorting Yard is a versatile technical setup supporting safe self-service, remote monitoring, and data-driven operations. According to Saaranen, this includes surveillance equipment, control systems, and a customer interface that handles waste declaration, payment, data collection, and reporting.

Nodeon has been responsible for designing the electrical, lighting, and control systems for several sorting yards across Finland. Nodeon’s expertise in smart city technologies has also contributed to the further development of Veloop’s technical solutions.
“When Nodeon joined the design team, we took a big leap forward — especially in the smart use of technology, including lighting. The concept had been developed before, but Nodeon helped us take long-needed steps in applying control logic and refining other technical solutions,” Saaranen says.
“The collaboration has been easy and flexible. Projects have progressed and been completed on schedule, making them straightforward to manage and lead — from the client’s perspective as well,” Saaranen concludes.
