Viherkallio residents’ park’s lighting integrates naturally with the environment

Although the primary purpose of outdoor lighting is to counter darkness, it is always also a part of the city’s visual identity. For this reason, the suitability of lighting solutions to their environment is carefully considered in the design process.

Nodeon served as the lighting and electrical designer for Viherkallio residents’ Park in Espoo, continuing the partnership with the City of Espoo that began in 2021. The park is a shared space where children and families can meet and spend time together.

The lighting for the Viherkallio park was intended to be something out of the ordinary. Composite poles finished with a pine pattern were chosen, blending perfectly with the park’s stunning pine landscape. The camouflage is so effective that even a client representative visiting the site initially didn’t realize he was standing next to a lamp post.

Smart lighting control reduces light pollution

Nodeon also programmed individual motion sensors for each lighting fixture. These automatically reduce the lighting intensity when the park is unoccupied. The solution minimizes disturbance to local residents and wildlife while saving energy.

“By using fixture-specific motion sensors, we were able to ensure the lights operate only when needed. The pine-patterned poles blend seamlessly with the park’s trees, making the overall setup less noticeable to visitors,” says Roope Mäkelä, Nodeon’s lighting designer.
